5 End of Summer Activities that Your Family Will Talk about Forever

Summer is flying by, especially for those with school age children! Here are a few ideas of what to do during these last few weeks of summer.

I have to admit that my wife and I didn’t think about getting in one more summer activity before school started for over 20 years. In fact, we avoided popular places during the summer. Most of our trips were in the Fall and Spring…one advantage of not having children. But now I think about these things because we have a son.

If you are trying to come up with a one or two last minute, memorable and low-cost things to do this summer, here are a few suggestions:

#5—Spend Time at a Children’s Home

Places like Round Rock Children’s Home, give a safe and encouraging home for children and families. Host parents always appreciate a meal and fellowship with other families. I bet your kids will enjoy hanging out with their kids too. You don’t have to think of anything fancy. Share a meal together and spend time playing games.

#4—Hang Out with Someone that Is Homeless

I know this might scare some of you away, but it is a great thing if you have older kids. I am sure if you live in a city you see men and women standing on street corners asking for some kind of help all the time. I have found one of the best ways to minister to a homeless person is to hang out with them. You can either sit and talk for a while or walk over to a fast-food place and buy them a meal. Listening to their story will impact your kids for a lifetime. It will also express value to the homeless person.

#3—Volunteer at a Food Bank

Nearly every community has a food bank. Give one in your town a call and see when you can volunteer. Even young children can help stock shelves, fill orders, paint, or even clean up.

Here are a couple in the Austin area:

Capitol Area Food Bank

Hill Country Community Ministries

#2—Volunteer for a Community Project

Look into local non-profits that have one-day projects that you can volunteer for. In the Austin area, For the City Network has a good tool to search for volunteer opportunities.

I am personally involved with a non-profit in the Lake Travis community that has monthly projects—Partners in Hope Lake Travis.

#1—Attend a Place of Worship

Pretty obvious, huh? Yet, many families don’t attend worship all summer long because of their busy schedules. Why wait until Christmas? What better way to prepare for the school year than to re-connect with God?

I promise you that if you choose to do something “others” focused it will impact your family for years to come. Who knows, it might even become a regular part of your families’ lifestyle.

Do you have any other ideas to add to this list? Please do so by leaving a comment.

  • I love these great out of the box ideas. Honestly, when I started the article I was dreaming of a beach like in the picture above. Thanks for helping me think outside myself.

  • A great read about understanding the world of the homeless is “Same Kind of Different As Me”, by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. After reading it, you can determine if you are a “Catch-and-release” friend. You can’t read it without understanding how virtual slavery exists in our nation of freedom, and how it affects people.
