An Excellent Wife Who Can Find?

We celebrated my wife’s birthday last night. I can’t tell you her age. Let’s just say this—she is more beautiful today than the day we met.

Until three years ago getting away for a birthday dinner or trip was pretty easy. Now with a preschool son, a lot more planning has to go into it.

I tried to put thought into our birthday date this year by getting a babysitter for our son (thank you Julia), making reservations at a romantic, trendy downtown Austin restaurant, and getting her a present that she had mentioned a few times wanting.

We did have a romantic, wonderful dinner at Bess Bistro on West Sixth. Danielle had Pan Seared Scallops over a bed of pumpkin seed risotto. I had a dish called Pappardelle a la Piquante. Don’t ask me how to pronounce that! Both were great.

We enjoyed the unique atmosphere of the nearly 100-year-old building. Of course it was nice to have a long uninterrupted delicious meal.

Danielle was completely surprised by the gift I bought her. I enjoy seeing Danielle excited about a gift since she is not a gift kinda gal.

We ended the evening by stopping in at Mozart’s Coffee Roasters on Lake Austin. We sat on the deck under an almost full moon listening to some live music while drinking our latte and hot tea.

A great evening with a beautiful wife.

I reflected a lot this week (we call it her birthday week around here) about how blessed I am to have Danielle as my wife. I know I wrote a blog in April for our 25th wedding anniversary, but Danielle is easy to talk about.

An excellent wife…

is a wife that sticks by her husband through the bad times. Believe me we have had some baaaddd times. Mostly relational and financial hard times. Most women would have tucked and ran. Not Danielle.

An excellent wife…

is a wife who supports her husband—even his crazy ideas. Boy oh Boy have I had some crazy ideas or tried some crazy things. I know Danielle didn’t always agree with my decisions, but she always supported me.

How many wives would agree to quit her job, be ok with her husband quitting his, packing up the house, and moving to Thailand for six months just to see if we were cut out to be missionaries? Danielle did.

An excellent wife…

is a wife who is not afraid of hard work. I have never seen Danielle shy away from anything that was difficult or challenging. The newest adventure is becoming a foster parent, then an adoptive mom of a preschooler at an age most mothers are sending their kids off to college or marriage.

An excellent wife…

is a wife that brings honor to her husband. When people find out that I am Danielle’s husband, I immediately increase in stature.

An excellent wife…

is a wife that has children that brag on her. When Danielle dropped off our son at preschool on Thursday, he proudly announced to his teachers, “Today is my Mom’s birthday!” He thinks that Danielle is pretty, fun, and cool.

An excellent wife…

is a wife who loves and fears the Lord. When I was in my mid-twenties with no promising marriage propositions, I prayed for a wife who loved God more than anything or anyone. Then I met Danielle.

An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. Proverbs 31:10 ESV

Happy Birthday Danielle! You indeed are more precious than jewels.

  • Truly a beautiful lady through and through. Someday you’ll have to tell the story of how y’all met. You and I both definitely married up, bro.
    Happy Birthday Week, Danielle!

  • Kenneth (Kenny), I love reading your posts and hearing about your family and all that you have lived and learned since our high school days. I have not met Danielle but she sounds like a very special lady and I would expect nothing less for you! Blessings to you both!

    • Thank you Martha. I have enjoyed reconnecting with several of our high school youth group friends over this past year! Of course, I see your brother almost every week at church.
Yes, even though I am biased, I must say Danielle is a very special lady.
May God bless you and your family as well.

  • What a beautiful tribute to Danielle you have written. Truly one of God’s greatest gifts is the wife that stands beside us in the hard times as well as the good. How blessed we are to have Proverbs 31 women in our lives and thank you for the reminder of that today.

  • So great to hear a bit of your story, Kenny! And wonderful to hear more about Danielle. And what an adventure y’all are on! It is so encouraging to hear more and more of God’s faithfulness in the lives of His children!

  • Congratulations on the wonderful birthday. The celebration of special times can’t be done alone, can it? God has blessed you – with each other & Luke.
