I Had a God-Ordained Pedicure — How to See God Move in Everything We Do

Yes, I am almost embarrassed to admit it. I fully expect to receive some harassment. My wife and I recently had a double date with some good friends. The first stop was a nail salon to get pedicures.

Yep that is me, 4th from the right. I will spare you all the details of what it was like to get my first ever pedicure! It is the conversation that transpired as I was wincing and wiggling in my chair that I want to talk about.

All three of the women working were Asian. Because Danielle and I have spent a lot of time in Thailand, we asked where they were from. The owner was from Laos. One employee was born in the U.S., but her parents were from Thailand.

Our conversation began as small talk about where they were from, but it began to change when we told them that we lived in Thailand for a while. They wanted to know why we lived there.

We shared about how we worked with a bible distribution project, a prostitution rescue center, a children’s shelter, and a few other ministries.

Small talk changed to what I think was a God ordained conversation.

The owner, Tia, began sharing how she moved to the United States years ago not knowing the culture, language, etc. Because of this she has a compassionate heart for other foreigners who move here, especially refugees.

She shared how she is spending time helping a group of Bhutanese refugees that have settled in North Austin. These are people who are fleeing their country with hardly anything. They do not understand anything about our culture.

Tia went on to describe how she has shown the Bhutanese families how to use the stove, washing machine and even the shower in their apartments. If you have ever spent any time in a foreign country you know exactly what it is like for these people.

Tia shared with us many other ways she is helping these families. It was encouraging to hear about her compassionate heart. When we finished our pedicures, she gave me her business card with more information about the families she is helping.

Tia is not a Christ follower, but God gave her a compassionate heart. I do not think that it was a coincidence that I went for my first ever pedicure that day in that nail salon and had that conversation. Where will it go from here? I do not know, but it is clear that God is moving in this person’s life.

Maybe I will not have to get another pedicure to have further interactions with Tia. I think I will rather help someone learn how to use an American shower.

How can you see God move in your everyday life? Here are a few things that I think will help:

  1. Remember or recognize that God is at work all the time, everywhere. When I lead or prepared mission teams, I often reminded the team that God was already at work before the team arrived and will continue to work after they left. This is true in our everyday life.
  2. Arrange Your Life. Sadly, most of us do not see God moving, because we are too busy with our own lives and priorities. Begin each day submitting your agenda to His.
  3. Ask God to open your eyes to see what is happening around you. We all miss things right in front of us because of our focus on other things. Watch this one minute video to test your awareness:

How many of you watched the video a second time?

I have to admit that when I was at the nail salon, I was not looking for an opportunity to join God in what He was doing. In fact, it was not until we walked out and my friend commented on the conversation that I recognized that it was God’s invitation to join Him.

Question for you: What are some other ways we can see God moving in our midst? Please share some below.

  • Several comments:
    1. I never would have guess you were a metrosexual, Kenny!
    2. It took a second watch of video to see the dancing bear. Love that! Will use that test in my ladies’ bible study!
    3. Just had coffee with ladies from my gym class. It is amazing how open people are if you just take the time to introduce yourself and engage in a conversation. Women are especially quick to open up about the pain and worries of life which makes missional living so much easier.

    • Dawn – I doubt that I yet fit that description!
It is amazing how people open up when we take time to spend with them. Bottom line is that we do not need anything more than a compassionate heart. We really are too self-consumed. Our time and agenda is more important than living life with enough margin to engage with other people. That was the way Jesus lived.
