Learning Curve

Since this is my first effort to write a book, I have had quite the learning curve.  When I first began, I was even doing research on how to write a book!  I was not even sure what subject I wanted to write about first.  The first couple of months I was writing down thoughts on three different subjects.  I struggled with the notion that I had to write something that was completely new.  Something that no one else had written about.  But I read something that helped me overcome that obstacle.  Even if I write on a subject that others have written about, no one has written it from my point of view.  Also, just because I may have read a book or two on a subject does not mean that others have read about that subject.  So, go ahead and write about it was the advice.  That freed me up tremendously.

Finally, I decided to write about what we were living – foster care and hopefully adoption.  Sure, many people have written about orphan care from many different angles.  But no one has written about our journey, or would be able to quite like we could.  So, I put aside the other topics for the time being and focused on writing this book.

I still am doing research on how to write and, more recently, how to get a book published.  I have learned a lot about digital technology and how it is reshaping the publishing world.  I never knew that there were several formats for e-books, for example.  I have also become acquainted with the print on demand option for authors.  These two technologies have really opened up the publishing world especially for new authors such as myself.

I have not had much time to write so far this week as I have been busy working with Partners in Hope, a non profit in the Lake Travis area.  I am on the board of this wonderful organization, and we are gearing up for our annual fundraiser.  Check out their website if you would like to know about the ministry – www.partnersinhope.laketravis.org

Blessings!
