Who Else Wants to Write in 2014?

I am taking a 31-day challenge this month. A writer/blogger that I follow (Jeff Goins) challenged us to write 500 words each day for 31 days. Exactly the challenge I need to begin 2014.

I began 2013 knowing hardly anything about blogging or writing. I finished the year having written over 120 blog posts and a published book. Yeah, I am a little bit proud of that accomplishment.

But, I recognize that I have a ton to learn when it comes to writing. A common question I get from experienced writers and bloggers is, “who is your audience?”

I decided early on that my blog would consist of topics related to missional lifestyle. I threw in the occasional blog post about my personal life or writing, but most were about what I think missional lifestyle is about.

Nothing wrong with a “random thoughts about life” blog. In fact, these can be fun to read. But, I want to find an audience or tribe that is passionate about the things that matter most to me.

That includes topics like orphan care, international missions and missional living.

At the end of 2013, I decided to add three more categories or topics that I think are important to missional living:

Worship

I wrote a blog post a few weeks ago, Warning: We Are What You Worship!  When we truly worship a God who sent His only Son to redeem this world, we become like Him. He is a missionary God. We become missionary people.

Discipleship

Mike Breen talks about here about what will kill the missional movement—lack of discipleship. Reaching outside of our context into another person’s is only a part of the missionary mindset.

We need to live life alongside them teaching them who Jesus Christ is and how to live life as a follower.

Stewardship

Most people don’t know what this word means. I guess if you are like me, and you grew up in church you have an idea. But it probably isn’t correct either.

Basically stewardship is managing the assets or estate of owner. In other words, you steward the owner’s assets and estate.

Our mindset today, at least in America, is that we are owners of our houses, cars, toys, 401K accounts, and so on.

A missional mindset is that we don’t own any of those things. God owns it all. We steward it.

I might ruffle a few feathers…

Another thing I learned this past year was the importance of identifying my voice. Another way of putting it is writing about what I am passionate about.

The reality is that the more I write from that place, the more you will either agree or disagree with me.

I am totally cool with that. I hope that as you read my blog this year that your emotional temperature will rise a few degrees. I hope you either get excited or angry enough to join the conversation.

Beginning of a new book…

The timing of Jeff Goins challenge is perfect. On days that I don’t write a blog post, I will work on my next manuscript.

I wrote a blog a few months ago asking for your advice on what my next book should be. I still would love your opinion! You can do so by going here.

I look forward to a fun year of writing and exploring missional lifestyle with you!

Let me hear from you if you are blogging or writing in 2014. If you are blogging, put a link to your website in the comments. Be sure to add what you blog about.

  • I’m in on the writing challenge! I just sat down yesterday and made a plan for my writing which included a daily writing challenge.
My blog “Embracing Life” is geared toward inspiring personal growth in heart, soul, and mind. http://light4mysteps.wordpress.com/2013/12/04/let-it-snow/
I have outlined a book project, but have not ‘made’ the time yet to diligently work on the writing. My other responsibilities in life continue to suck the hours from my day and even writing the blog has been sporadic this year. But my heart has been heavy to make a change. So regarding my writing in 2014: My hope and desire is to learn, improve, and do it! Including a few book reviews 🙂

    • Yay for you Shellynne! I look forward to reading your blog post this year. If you don’t follow Jeff Goins, I highly recommend you to do so. He is great at helping writers like you and me.
